  1. I'll admit that I tend to listen more to the nostalgic portions of your podcast(s) than those tackling newer issues. I suppose this is because the Old Firestorm comics and the DC Who's Who were at a point in my life when comics shifted from being "oh, here's something I can read this week" to a serious collection habit.

It was also at a point in my life when comics (along with SF/Fantasy novels) become a constant during a period of serious change for me -- moving from the Philippines to the West Coast -- that was, in hindsight, both exhilarating and traumatic.

So naturally, a lot of comics events during that era are more real and vivid to me than some events in my life.

I enjoy listening to you guys, as you (and a lot of the community who write in) remind me of the really smart, quirky guys I would consider my friends in school in the Philippines, and the dudes who I'd hang out with at comic shops and gaming stores and at the gaming table. [ Yes, I picked up the DC Heroes RPG -- all three editions before Mayfair dropped the property. ]

Firestorm, alas, lost me during that Fire Elemental period. Aquaman lost his luster early on (he had serious cred it my childhood mind when I saw him in his all undersea cartoon waaaay back, and could hurl water balls at people and ride frighteningly huge seahorses). But I've always been thrilled when a solid version of him starts selling. You know he's made it back at last, when a version of him appears in a DC fighting game!

As for this issue of Who's Who -- Nightwing was indeed one of my favorite heroes at the time. And, who am I kidding, still is despite the constant attempts to get him killed or moved off stage.

When the Who's Who came out, comics availability was hard to come by in the Philippines, and when I was in the U.S., I had some serious catching up to do.

As such, some of those listed here were real revelations to me, as I'd never heard of them before: Per Degaton seemed to be such a badass (until I actually got my hands on the All-Star Squadron), Nocturna was seared into my consciousness as a sex symbol that faded with the changes to the DC Universe post-crisis, and I was always bummed about how the Infinitors could've been done -- I dunno -- better, given the great Ordway visuals and costume designs.

    Keep on keepin' on, guys.

Fan the flame, and ride the wave!
