Thank you, Rob, for this treat of an episode. I was nearly 20 years old when this was released in the States, and I didn't discover the book until I found a rather roughed-up copy (sans tape) in a second-hand book shop in Singapore in the late 1980s. I was a bit taken aback to open the pages and see the text in an "I Can Read" storybook format, but the layouts and artwork was on par with the comics I loved so I didn't care if I was "too old for it."
ReplyDeleteIt would be a number of years before I would first hear the audio, but I did manage to confirm that it was indeed Jerry (Count Von Count/Simon Soundman/ Mr. Snuffleupagus) Nelson that had voiced Green Lantern from the good Mr. Nelson himself, whom by pure luck I had managed to briefly meet after a Jim Henson panel showing in Los Angeles in the early naughties (2000s). I had brought along the book, just in case, and he was actually surprised to see someone had brought a non-Sesame-Street-related item, but he had signed it in a very cool Sesame Street fashion ("This autograph is brought to you today by the letters, X, U, and M, and by [Jerry Nelson's signature]").
Of course, years later, our son Isamu tore up the book, but that's what toddlers do. I managed to find another copy in better condition and with the audio tape included, but it is a little less of a treasure for obvious reasons...
As I understand it, Fisher Price was producing a number of audio tape books featuring the Muppets and Sesame Street characters from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, so the Muppet connection to these DC audio books was little surprise to me -- they are all incredibly talented actors. In fact, the Wonder Woman book in particular features "evil Maria" (Sesame Street's Sonia Manzano as The Cheetah)...
